This season has brought some good news. Thanks to the bravery of Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Northern Iraq, this week saw the long-awaited freedom of Yazidi women in Sinjar after four months of siege by Islamic State terrorists who in a scourge of rape and murder forced the surviving women and children from their homes near and in the Sinjar Mountains.The fleeing women were cut off from food and health care supplies. Gradually, over the past five days, women and children have been united with families and loved ones. The evacuation continues.

The sad news emerging from Sinjar’s evacuees is that many women took their own lives like a certain 19-year old, “Jilan”, whose case is reported by her brother and one of the 20 girls who were with Jilan.
“One day we were given clothes that looked like dance costumes and were told to bathe and wear those clothes. Jilan killed herself in the bathroom. She cut her wrists and hanged herself. She was very beautiful; I think she knew she was going to be taken away by a man and that is why she killed herself,” added the girl, who was among those who has escaped. It is not clear how many Yazidi women have been abducted and remain captive, but Iraq’s Human Rights Ministry put the number at many “hundreds.” Amnesty International and The RINJ Foundation report the number as “possibly thousands.”
